What a week in the Maldives really costs, with real numbers
From the flight to the boat transfer, from the villa to the meals: an honest breakdown for seven nights, across three different budgets.
The Maldives have a strange communication problem: the photos all look identical, the prices don't. Between the three hundred euro a night villa and the three thousand euro one, it's the same turquoise lagoon in the picture, and working out what you're actually paying for means going through the bill line by line, without letting the view distract you.
Start with getting there. An economy flight from Europe runs between seven hundred and thirteen hundred euros per person, depending on how far ahead you book. Then there's the internal transfer, the line item everyone forgets until they see it on the invoice: a resort near Male is reachable by speedboat for one hundred to two hundred euros per person round trip, but the most beautiful islands want a seaplane, and that's four hundred to six hundred euros a head. Add it up before you fall in love with a remote island, not after.
Three budgets, three different trips
Accessible tier: there are honest four star resorts between three hundred fifty and six hundred euros a night for a double villa on the beach. Seven nights land between twenty five hundred and four thousand euros. Mid tier, often the best value in the whole archipelago: six hundred to twelve hundred a night, overwater included in plenty of cases. Top tier: fifteen hundred and up, with no real ceiling, and that's where service simply stops having flaws.
Then there's the real wildcard in the final bill: food and drink. Rule of thumb: at a mid tier resort, a couple without a meal plan spends between one hundred and two hundred fifty euros a day on lunches, dinners and drinks. Over seven days that's another thousand to eighteen hundred euros. Which is exactly why, as we cover elsewhere, half board in the Maldives almost always pays off.
Add it all up and a decent week for two starts around six thousand euros, a well chosen mid tier week sits between eight and twelve thousand, and above that there's no real ceiling. Anyone promising you the "real" Maldives for three thousand euros for two is talking about a local island guesthouse, which is a lovely trip, but a different trip, with a different experience entirely.
Where can you actually save without ruining anything? Dates, first of all: May and October cost up to forty percent less than February, with manageable rain risk. Transfers, by picking islands reachable by speedboat rather than seaplane. And comparison shopping, because the exact same resort on the exact same dates can swing by hundreds of euros between sites. On a ten thousand euro week, ten minutes of comparing prices pays off more than any other tip in this article.
