Where to stay in Aveiro: canals or beach

They call it the Venice of Portugal, and in part it is true: canals, bridges and the colourful moliceiro boats gliding through the centre. But Aveiro is much more than that. It is a lagoon city, between the salt pans and the ocean, with Art Nouveau buildings, a sweet cuisine built around ovos moles and, a few kilometres away, some of the prettiest and most original beaches in Portugal. Staying overnight, rather than passing through on a day trip from Porto, lets you enjoy the canals at sunset and a trip to the sea.

The centre is flat, small and done on foot or by bike, but the areas have different characters, and there is the big choice between city and beach. Here is how they really feel, with indicative prices and the places worth having nearby.

The centre and the canals

The heart is the Canal Central, with the moliceiros moored, the bridges and the cafes on the banks, around the Rossio and the Praca do Peixe. It is the most convenient and scenic area, with the Art Nouveau buildings and everything to hand. Sleeping here is the right call for a first-timer or a couple, with the best atmosphere and the canals on your doorstep.

Beira-Mar

The station and the modern area

Around the railway station and in the more modern part of the city you find more practical, often cheaper hotels. It is the convenient choice for arriving by train, with frequent links from Porto and Lisbon, and the centre stays a few minutes away on foot along the canal.

A few kilometres away, on the dune belt between the lagoon and the ocean, lie the beaches. Indicative figures: Portugal stays affordable, and Aveiro costs less than the big cities like Lisbon and Porto.

• A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 60-110 euros a night; prices rise at Costa Nova in summer.
• A dinner for two of fish with vinho verde: about 35-55 euros in a good restaurant.
• Coffee: cheap, often under a euro for an espresso at the counter; a beer 2-3 euros.
• Transport: the centre is done on foot or by bike (Aveiro is flat and cycle-friendly); buses to the beaches cost a few euros.

Getting there and around

The handiest airport is Porto (OPO), about 75 km away, under an hour by car. The best way, though, is the train: Aveiro is on the main Lisbon-Porto line, with frequent services, about an hour from Porto and a little over two hours from Lisbon on the fast trains. By car you arrive easily on the A1 motorway.

In town you do not need a car: the centre is flat and easily done on foot or by bike, and Aveiro is one of Portugal's most cycle-friendly cities. For the Costa Nova and Barra beaches there are buses, or a short drive or ride along the ria.

When to go

• January-March: cool and rainy (this is the Atlantic), a quiet city and prices at their lowest.
• April-June: pleasant spring, mild, canals in bloom and few crowds, maybe the best window for the city.
• July-August: peak beach season, pleasant heat and busy beaches at Costa Nova and Barra. Book ahead.
• September-October: the sea is still warm, golden salt pans and fewer people, an excellent compromise.
• November-December: damp and quiet, good prices and an intimate mood among the canals.
