Shoulder season: travel better for less
The weeks just before and after peak season bring good weather, low prices and liveable cities. How to spot them destination by destination.
There is a moment in the year, for almost every destination, when everything lines up: the weather is still good, the crowds have gone, and prices collapse. It is shoulder season, the weeks straddling peak and low season, and it may be the best kept secret of people who travel often.
Where and when
For the Mediterranean it means late May and early June, or well into September: the sea still warm, the cities breathable, hotels at half of what they cost in August. For European capitals it is often November and early December, before the Christmas lights. For South East Asia it is the edges of the dry season. The rule is to seek the border, not the heart, of the tourist season.
Why it really pays
Beyond the price, shoulder season gives back the very experience you travel for: restaurants with no wait, monuments with no queue, hotel staff under less pressure and more willing to help. Moving your trip by two weeks is often worth more than any trick about when you book.
