Where to stay in Plovdiv: Old Town or Kapana

Plovdiv likes to call itself one of the oldest cities in Europe, lived in for seven thousand years, and you feel it as you walk: a Roman theatre still in use, the colourful Bulgarian Revival houses clinging to the hill, and below them an artists' quarter full of bars. It is still off the mass-tourism track, prices are among the lowest on the continent, and it was European Capital of Culture in 2019. Staying overnight, rather than seeing it on a day trip from Sofia, is the way to enjoy it in the evening, when the Old Town empties and Kapana lights up.

Where to stay in Plovdiv, area by area

The Old Town (Stariya grad)

On the hill spreads the Old Town, a maze of cobbled streets and big brightly painted wooden houses, now museums, galleries and small charming guesthouses. The centre and the main street

The long pedestrian street Knyaz Aleksandar I is the city's modern living room, with shops, cafes and the remains of the Roman Stadium surfacing under the square. It is the most convenient and flat area, with hotels of every level, ideal for a first-timer who wants everything to hand with no climbs.

Anyone after greenery, space and even lower prices looks to the streets around Tsar Simeon Garden and the residential districts just outside the old core. These are calm areas, good for families and longer stays, with parks, supermarkets and the hill of Bunardzhika for a walk. The centre still stays minutes away on foot or by bus.

Getting there and around

The small Plovdiv airport has very limited flights, so the gateway is Sofia (SOF), about 150 km away, a little under two hours by car or bus. Coaches between Sofia and Plovdiv are frequent and cheap, and the train links the two cities too. By car you arrive easily on the Trakia motorway.

In town you do not need a car: the Old Town, Kapana and the main street are all pedestrian and close together, easily done on foot (reckoning with the cobbles and climbs of the Old Town). City buses cover the rest for a few lev.

When to go

• January-February: cold and quiet, prices at their lowest, the Old Town silent and atmospheric.
• March-May: ideal spring, mild, trees in blossom and plenty of cultural events.
• June: pleasantly warm and long days, before the full heat.
• July-August: very hot on the Thracian plain by day, but lively evenings in Kapana.
• September-October: maybe the best window, warm days, grape harvest and autumn colours.
• November-December: cool and quiet, great prices and an intimate mood.
