San Francisco’s Gilded Age

Liked mostIf you enjoyed the Gilded Age and wondered what it would be like to live in a turn of the century (1900s) mansion, this place may be for you. It is not a traditional 5 star property with a pool or on site restaurant but it is a unique experience. This is a 12 or so room house. Some rooms are a lot better than others because some rooms (the higher floors) were for staff not the family. So keep that in mind. The location is good but not in the middle of tourist areas. The service is evolving. Staff is nice but more like the staff of a home than a hotel. For example, the included breakfast is made to order not on a buffet. Skip the coffee, but do enjoy a drink in the parlor. This would be a great place to reserve with a group of friends. Parking is limited but we were able to park out front after hours.

Liked mostIt has a lot of potential. Very cool layout. Just needs some updating of furniture add to the workout room and offer better coffee. Breakfast said included but was some yoplait yogurt containers and minimal cut up fruit. Four other breakfast options available on menu to order. The staff was very nice. Nice that they have parking available behind the property for a price.

Could improveIt felt very empty. And not many other hotel guests.

Rare old world charm in San Francisco.

Liked mostOld world charm in the heart of the city. It's not your typical impersonal large hotel or a trendy hipster boutique hotel and tricked out room decor and amenities. The place harkens back to a time when traveling is private, intimate and personal experience. The hotel is a spacious former private mansion converted into small inn. It has all the amenities of a large hotel but in an intimate setting. Located in a part of the city that's walking distance to Japantown.

Could improveThis is a personal preference about lighting in general. It seems like the lights in my room is outfitted with 3000K LED lights. Warmer 2700k LED lights seem more in keeping with what I'm used to. 300K lights is too bright and they belong in public space... not in bedrooms.

No integrity

Liked mostWith only two weeks to go until our trip was scheduled, I received notice that the hotel was unilaterally cancelling my reservation. No explanation was given even though I asked for one. The person calling apologized but the apology was perfunctory. He offered no serious help in arranging for other accommodations nor any form of compensation. The Mansion is a nice property (I’ve stayed there before), charges premium rates but clearly, they offer Holiday Inn level service (and that’s not fair to Holiday Inn). Needless to say, I will not be staying there again.
