Best hotels in Bangkok: where to stay by area

Thailand · November 28, 2025

The best hotels in Bangkok and where to stay: Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn, the riverside, the old city and Siam, with prices and tips.

Best hotels in Bangkok: where to stay by area

Bangkok is an overwhelming metropolis of golden temples, skyscrapers, markets and street food, and the area where you sleep completely changes the trip: the modernity of Sukhumvit, the rooftops of Silom and Sathorn, the charm of the riverside, the temples of the old city, the shopping of Siam. The Skytrain and metro dodge the traffic and river boats ply the Chao Phraya, so location matters enormously. Here are the best areas to stay, the prices to reckon with and, at the end, a selection of real hotels with live rates.

Where to stay in Bangkok, area by area

Sukhumvit

The long modern artery along the Skytrain, among malls, rooftop bars and nightlife. It is the right call for a first-timer who wants convenience, good links and venues within reach.

  • The Terminal 21 mall at Asok
  • The fashionable district of Thonglor
  • Rooftop bars and international restaurants
  • The BTS Skytrain across the city

For convenience and nightlife, look for hotels in Sukhumvit.

Silom and Sathorn

The business district, with skyscrapers, famous rooftops and the green of Lumphini Park. It is the choice for anyone after elegance, nightlife and a well-served base, close to the river.

For elegance and rooftops, see hotels in Silom.

The riverside

Along the Chao Phraya River, among historic luxury hotels and evening markets, is the most atmospheric, romantic Bangkok. It is the choice for anyone after atmosphere, water views and a more relaxed pace, with boats as transport.

For luxury and atmosphere, look for hotels on the riverside.

Old City and Rattanakosin

The historic royal quarter of the great temples, with the lively backpacker Khao San Road. It is the choice for anyone who wants the monuments on foot, a traditional atmosphere and more affordable prices.

For temples and budget, see hotels in the old city.

Siam and Pratunam

The shopping heart around Siam Paragon, MBK and CentralWorld, with the big Pratunam market. It is the practical choice for anyone who loves shopping and transport hubs in a very central spot.

For shopping and centrality, look for hotels in Siam.

What it costs

Indicative figures: Thailand uses the baht (THB, around 38 to a euro) and Bangkok is very affordable.

  • A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 1,500-4,000 THB a night (about 40-105 euros).
  • A dinner for two: about 600-1,200 THB at a mid-range restaurant (about 16-32 euros); a street-food pad thai 60-80 THB, a coffee 60-100 THB.
  • Transport: a BTS Skytrain or MRT metro ride costs about 17-62 THB; the river boats are cheap.
  • Tourist tax: Thailand charges no per-night tourist tax; the 300 THB entry fee for air arrivals is announced but repeatedly delayed and not in force in 2026. Hotels add 7 percent VAT and often a 10 percent service charge (the so-called plus plus). Verify at booking.

For a real sense before you choose, compare current prices in Bangkok.

Getting there and around

The main airport is Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about 30 km east, linked by the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai in around half an hour; the second is Don Muang (DMK), mostly low-cost. In town the BTS Skytrain, the MRT metro and the river boats dodge the traffic.

A car is not advised given the heavy traffic. With a good location near a BTS or MRT station, you move around fast and cheaply.

When to go

  • November-February: cool and dry, the best season.
  • March-May: very hot and humid, with Songkran in mid-April, the water festival.
  • June-October: the rainy season, short heavy downpours, fewer crowds and lower prices.

Good to know

Which area is best on a first visit? Sukhumvit for convenience, or the riverside and old city for temples and atmosphere.

Do I need a car in Bangkok? No, the Skytrain, metro and river boats cover everything; traffic makes a car inadvisable.

Is there a tourist tax? No per-night tax; the 300 THB entry fee is delayed and not in force, while hotels add VAT and a service charge.

What currency is used? The Thai baht (THB); cards work in malls and hotels, keep cash for street food and markets.

How do I dress for temples? Cover shoulders and knees at the Grand Palace and temples.

How many days do I need? Three or four nights for temples, markets, rooftops and perhaps a day trip.
