Spain · January 23, 2026

The best hotels in Madrid and where to stay: Sol and Centro, Barrio de las Letras, Malasana and Chueca, La Latina and Salamanca, with prices and tips.

Best hotels in Madrid: where to stay by area

Madrid is a warm, lively capital of grand squares, record-breaking museums and a life that spills into the street until late, and the area where you sleep changes the rhythm of the trip: the pulsing centre of Sol, the literary quarter beside the museums, the nightlife of Malasana and Chueca, the elegance of Salamanca. The metro is excellent and the centre is walkable, but location decides how close you are to the nightlife or the calm. Here are the best areas to stay, the prices to reckon with and, at the end, a selection of real hotels with live rates.

Where to stay in Madrid, area by area

Sol and Centro

The geographic heart around the Puerta del Sol, the Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via. It is the right call for a first-timer who wants everything on foot, with maximum centrality and plenty of life, allowing for a bit of noise.

For centrality and life, look for hotels in Sol and Centro.

Barrio de las Letras

The literary quarter between the Plaza Santa Ana and the triangle of great museums, full of taverns and tapas bars. It is the choice for anyone who loves art, culture and eating out, staying central but a touch quieter.

For museums and tapas, see hotels in the Barrio de las Letras.

Malasana and Chueca

Young, fashionable Madrid: bohemian Malasana and the LGBTQ heart of Chueca, among boutiques, bars and markets. It is the choice for anyone who loves nightlife, style and long evenings, steps from the centre.

For nightlife and style, look for hotels in Malasana and Chueca.

La Latina and Lavapies

The most traditional, multicultural Madrid: La Latina with its tapas streets and colourful Lavapies. It is the choice for anyone who loves neighbourhood atmosphere, food and markets, often at more affordable prices.

For tapas and neighbourhood life, see hotels in La Latina.

Salamanca and Retiro

Elegant and orderly, the Barrio de Salamanca is the luxury shopping district, beside the great Retiro park. It is the choice for anyone after comfort, elegance and quiet, with high-end shops and greenery.

For luxury and calm, look for hotels in Salamanca.

What it costs

Indicative figures: Madrid offers good value among the big European capitals.

  • A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 90-190 euros a night.
  • A dinner for two with wine: about 40-70 euros; a cana (small beer) 2-3 euros, often with a free tapa; a coffee 1.80-2.50 euros.
  • Transport: a single metro ticket 1.50-2 euros; a 10-trip Metrobus card is worth it.
  • Tourist tax: Madrid does NOT charge any tourist tax (unlike Barcelona or the Balearics); VAT is already included in the price. Still, check the total at booking.

For a real sense before you choose, compare current prices in Madrid.

Getting there and around

The airport is Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas (MAD), about 13 km northeast, linked by metro line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios in around half an hour (with an airport supplement), or by the Cercanias C1 train and Express buses. In town the metro is excellent and the centre is very walkable.

A car in the centre is unnecessary, between pedestrian zones and traffic. With a good location, almost everything is on foot or a few stops away.

When to go

  • April-June: pleasant warmth and terraces, maybe the best window.
  • July-August: very hot, often 38-40 degrees, many locals leave: emptier but scorching.
  • September-October: excellent weather, still-warm days, ideal for walking.
  • November-December: cold and sunny, with Christmas lights along the Gran Via.
  • January-February: dry cold, fewer crowds and lower prices.
