Where to go in November: the best value window of the year

Where to go in November and the warm places in December that actually work: hurricanes ending, monsoons flipping, Europe emptying, with the honest caveats.

Where to go in November: the best value window of the year

Where to go in November usually gets answered with a list. This is the mechanism instead, because November and the first half of December are not cheap by accident: four things happen at the same time, and knowing them also tells you where not to go.

The European numbers give the scale. The EU recorded 511,537,058 nights in tourist accommodation in August 2025 and 148,514,899 in November. The step from October to November is the sharpest fall in the European travel year: 37.8% down in 2025.

Then there is the part almost nobody writes. Every November destination carries a real flaw. The Canaries are entering their rainy season, Thailand is not dry yet, the Maldives are officially still in the wet season. What follows is the official figure for each, with the flaw next to it.

Why November empties out in Europe

Two public series carry the whole argument. The first is Eurostat's monthly nights spent at tourist accommodation, updated on 7 August 2026: in both 2024 and 2025, November was the second emptiest month of the European year, behind only January. December recovers barely at all, 9.5% up on November in 2025, so the empty window genuinely extends into early December.

The second is Eurostat's harmonised index of consumer prices, accommodation services class, 2015 equals 100. These are transacted prices, not published rates. Across the EU the index hit 166.77 in August 2025 and 143.15 in November: 14.2% below the August peak and 6.9% below October.

November is still not the cheapest month of the European year, since January, February and March all sit lower on that index. It is the cheapest month with usable weather. The general shoulder season logic is in our mid season guide. One scope limit, stated once: that series covers the EU only. Outside Europe this article argues from weather and crowds rather than measured prices, because no comparable series exists.

The Atlantic hurricane season closes

The official dates come from NOAA's National Hurricane Center: the Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaks on 10 September, and concentrates almost all its activity between mid August and mid October.

The number that actually matters comes from the Meteorological Department Curaçao: across 1886 to 2013 the season's median end date, the day the year's last cyclone dissipates, is 29 October. In a median year the season is over before November begins. On a separate tabulation covering 1886 to 1992, the same document counts 308 storms forming in September against 42 in November, an average of 0.4 a year. Still, the official dates are a convention, and that source warns the season occasionally ends outside the period. The risk collapses, it does not disappear.

For 2026 there is one more factor. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, on 6 August 2026, gave a 75% chance of a below normal season with a range of 7 to 13 named storms, and put it down to El Niño and the vertical wind shear it drives over the tropical Atlantic.

On the ground, Cancún, on 1971 to 2000 normals, averages a 29.6 degree November maximum and 131.6 mm of rain over 12.4 days, while the inland Yucatán is far drier. Rooms are on the Cancún page.

Winter sun destinations within reach of Europe

On AEMET's 1981 to 2010 normals, the Canaries have the steadiest profile at this latitude. In November, Fuerteventura airport records 13 mm of rain over 2.2 days, Lanzarote 15 mm over 3 days with 207 hours of sunshine in the month, and Tenerife South 26 mm over just 1.9 days, with mean maxima between 24 and 25 degrees.

The sharpest contrast is not between islands but inside one. Tenerife North, sixty kilometres away and 632 metres up, records 81 mm over 8.3 days: three times the south, because of altitude and a slope facing the trade winds. Picking the side matters more than picking the island. And at every one of these stations December is wetter than November, because the Canary rain year runs November to March, with Lanzarote going from 15 mm to 29 mm.

On Madeira, IPMA's 1991 to 2020 normals say something else: Funchal records 80.3 mm in November and 94.8 mm in December, and its three wettest months of the year are December, October and November. It stays mild, but eternal spring it is not. Cape Verde, by contrast, has already stopped raining: Sal, on 1961 to 1990 normals, averages 2.5 mm over a single November rain day, with a 27.3 degree maximum. Search rooms in Funchal with the rain jacket packed.

Warm places in December: Egypt, Morocco and the Gulf

If the question is warm places in December, one rule does most of the work: across the Saharan belt and the Gulf, November is the last genuinely hot month, and December is when the rain arrives. The figures come from national normals published by the World Meteorological Organization.

  • Hurghada, 1981 to 2010 normals: November mean maximum 27.0 degrees and minimum 17.0, with 2.2 mm of rain; December 23.2 and 13.0.
  • Luxor: a 29.0 degree November maximum but a 12.3 minimum, and by December the mean minimum falls to 7.8.
  • Marrakech, 1991 to 2020 normals: November 23.1 and 10.7 degrees with 29.8 mm over 5 days; December 20.2 and 7.3.
  • Agadir: November 24.1 and 12.9 degrees, but 42.3 mm of rain, more than Marrakech. The Atlantic coast is not the drier option.
  • Dubai, on old normals covering 1974 to 1991: November 30.5 degrees and 1.8 mm; December 26.2 degrees and 14.3 mm.
  • Aqaba against Amman, on Jordanian normals that carry no published reference period: 27.0 against 20.4 degrees in November, and by December Amman drops to 14.4 degrees with 49.2 mm over 8.4 days.

One Red Sea point has to be made without figures, because no official ones exist: the wind is structural, funnelled by the mountains on both shores along the axis of the basin. That wind is a year round feature of the basin, not a November one. For rooms there are guides to Marrakech and Dubai.

Where the monsoon is still raining: the honest Asian numbers

The Thai government portal places winter between mid October and mid February, then warns on the same page that the south keeps getting heavy rain until December. The figures confirm it: Phuket records 173.7 mm over 16.1 days in November and only drops to 61.9 mm in December, while Ko Samui, on the Gulf side, is in the wettest month of its year in November at 489.6 mm over 19.6 days.

Put plainly: November is not yet a good month on either Thai coast. The Andaman side becomes reliable in December, the Gulf islands not until roughly January or February. Bangkok works immediately, with 48 mm in November and 10 mm on a single day in December, so where to stay in Bangkok is a neighbourhood question rather than a seasonal one. In Vietnam the problem is the central coast rather than the north: Da Nang records 486 mm over 21 days.

October and November are Sri Lanka's second inter monsoon, and it rains on the whole island: Colombo 414.4 mm and Trincomalee 342.9 mm, on 1961 to 1990 normals. The split only opens in December, and it opens the opposite way to the story people tell: the southwest dries out, at 175.3 mm, while the east enters the northeast monsoon, at 364.5 mm.

The Maldives, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service, run a wet season from mid May to November and a dry season from January to March. It still works, because the rain comes as short showers, but it is not the dry season: the detail is in our Maldives rainy season guide.

The southern hemisphere is in spring

Cape Town has a winter rainfall climate, so November is already summery and dry: a 23.5 degree mean maximum and 14 mm over 4.9 days, on 1961 to 1990 normals.

The real advantage, though, is a calendar one. The South African school calendar puts term four of 2026 from 6 October to mid December, so the domestic summer holiday that fills the Cape coastline does not start until after 11 December. Neighbourhoods are covered in where to stay in Cape Town.

Australia splits cleanly. Perth, on 1994 to 2010 normals, records 26.4 degrees and 19.7 mm in November, then 28.8 degrees and just 6.1 mm in December: the most reliable option on the continent. Cairns is the one to avoid, at 181.3 mm in December, and from 1 November the Queensland coast also enters its marine stinger season, which Surf Life Saving Queensland says runs through to May. Search hotels in Perth.

The Caribbean: the ABC islands and the caveat nobody writes

Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao sit near 12 degrees north off the Venezuelan coast, south of the usual tracks. The Curaçao met service quantifies it: on average once every four years a tropical cyclone passes within 150 kilometres, mostly to the north and without bringing serious bad weather, and roughly once a century the islands take considerable damage.

The caveat comes from the same service: the ABC rainy season runs October to January. November and December are the wettest part of their year, with 96 mm over 10 days and 99 mm over 12 days on Curaçao, on 1961 to 1990 normals. They are arid islands where it rains precisely when you visit. For comparison Nassau, squarely inside the hurricane belt, is drier in December at 50 mm over 8 days. See rooms on Curaçao.

European cities: where the discount is real

On the accommodation price index, comparing November 2025 with each country's own peak month, the picture is far less uniform than people assume.

  • France 25.5% down, Portugal 23.4%, Greece 22.5%: this is where the discount is deep.
  • Italy 13.4% down, Spain 12.5%, Hungary 10.9%.
  • Austria 6.4% down, Germany 4.8%, Czechia barely 1.1%.

Two surprises sit inside. Austria's most expensive month of 2025 was December, not a summer month, and Czechia is almost aseasonal: Prague and Vienna are not November bargains. Italy's peak is also in the wrong place, in September.

Barcelona records 17.3 degrees with 58.8 mm, and December is the drier of the two months at 40.5 mm. Athens, on 1955 to 1997 normals, 18.1 degrees and 58.3 mm. Rome is the opposite case, with November its wettest month of the year at 115.4 mm at Fiumicino on 1971 to 2000 normals. Where the discount is deepest the weather has already turned, and where the weather holds, in southern Iberia and Greece, the discount is still good. Where to stay in Athens is the best compromise between the two.

The dates that ruin the maths: 8 December and the markets

Two dates break the whole argument. The first is the Immaculate Conception bridge. In 2026, 8 December falls on a Tuesday: in Spain it is a non substitutable national holiday under the labour calendar published in the official state gazette, and because 6 December falls on a Sunday, Monday 7 is a holiday in several autonomous communities. Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026 is therefore a four day break in Spain, and the Monday is the obvious single day off in Italy and Austria too. It is the one early December window that is not cheap.

The second is when the Christmas markets open. The idea that Europe sits empty between the summer crowds and Christmas holds up poorly: according to the Vienna tourist board, in 2026 Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz open on 6 November and Rathausplatz on 13 November. In Vienna the genuinely empty window runs roughly 2 to 5 November, between the All Saints weekend and the first opening. One week, not two months. The first Sunday of Advent is 29 November: city by city dates are in our European Christmas markets guide.

Where to go in November: how to search it on Edenfinder

Put it all together and where to go in November depends on which of these five situations you want to use.

  • Reliable heat and little rain: Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, the Red Sea, Oman, Sal in Cape Verde.
  • Empty, discounted European cities: southern Iberia and Greece, avoiding the 8 December bridge.
  • The southern hemisphere before it fills: Cape Town before 11 December, and Perth.
  • Southeast Asia: wait for December on the Andaman coast and roughly January or February for the Gulf of Thailand.
  • The Caribbean: cyclone risk collapses, but budget for rain on the ABC islands.

Fix the dates first, because in this window a week of difference weighs more than the choice of city: the logic is in our when to book guide. And compare the stay total, never the nightly price.

Edenfinder is a comparator and a technical intermediary: it shows and compares real availability and prices at that moment, and the booking is completed on the supply partner's own channel with Nuitee as merchant of record. Frequently asked questions

Is November or December cheaper?

On European prices they are almost the same month: the Eurostat accommodation services index read 143.15 in November 2025 and 143.66 in December. Two limits come with that number: the series covers the EU only, so it settles nothing for the Maldives or the Caribbean, and both figures are whole month averages that cannot price a single week. The real fall sits between October and November, 6.9%, and inside December the 5 to 8 bridge, a public holiday in Spain and a long weekend in Italy and Austria, is still the expensive window.

Are there still hurricanes in the Caribbean in November?

The risk remains but it is small: between 1886 and 1992 the Atlantic produced 42 November storms in total, an average of 0.4 a year, and only 21 of those reached hurricane strength. The median end date of the season, measured across 1886 to 2013, is 29 October, before November even begins. The official dates still run to 30 November and the Curaçao met service warns the season occasionally ends outside them, so the sensible move is a refundable rate rather than a different month.

Which Canary island is driest in November?

Of the Canary stations AEMET publishes normals for, Fuerteventura airport is the driest in November, at 13 mm over 2.2 rain days on the 1981 to 2010 series, ahead of Lanzarote at 15 mm and Gran Canaria at 22 mm. La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are not in that set. Which side of the island you pick matters more than which island anyway: Tenerife South records 26 mm against 81 mm at Tenerife North. And if the dates are flexible take November over December, because Fuerteventura goes from 13 to 26 mm and Gran Canaria from 22 to 31.

Are the Maldives worth it in November?

Yes, though November counts as wet season for the Maldives Meteorological Service, not dry season: that runs January to March, with December only a transition month. In practice Malé averages 231 mm over 13 rain days in November, and the country gets 7 to 9 hours of sunshine a day in these months against 10 to 11 from January to March. It still works because the rain comes as short showers with sunny spells between them, but it is not the postcard dry season.

Which European countries actually get cheaper in November?

Not all of them, and the spread is wide. On the same Eurostat index, November 2025 sat 25.5% below the annual peak in France, 23.4% below in Portugal, 22.5% in Greece, 13.4% in Italy and 12.5% in Spain. Central Europe barely moves: Czechia's November is 1.1% below its own peak, and Austria's most expensive month of 2025 was December rather than summer. The useful overlap is southern Iberia and Greece, where the discount is deep and the weather is still mild; Prague and Vienna are neither cheap nor warm.
