Best hotels in Istanbul: where to stay by area

Turkey · January 9, 2026

The best hotels in Istanbul and where to stay: Sultanahmet, Galata and Karakoy, Taksim, Besiktas and Kadikoy, with prices and tips.

Best hotels in Istanbul: where to stay by area

Istanbul is a city straddling two continents, a weave of imperial mosques, bazaars and ferries crossing the Bosphorus, and the area where you sleep completely changes the trip: the monuments of Sultanahmet, the creative Istanbul of Galata and Karakoy, the nightlife of Taksim, the Bosphorus of Besiktas, the authentic Asian side of Kadikoy. Trams, metro and ferries link everything and traffic is heavy, so location matters. Here are the best areas to stay, the prices to reckon with and, at the end, a selection of real hotels with live rates.

Where to stay in Istanbul, area by area

Sultanahmet, the old city

The historic peninsula where the great monuments cluster: the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. It is the right call for a first-timer who wants the monuments on foot, knowing it is quieter and touristy at night.

For monuments and historic centrality, look for hotels in Sultanahmet.

Galata and Karakoy

On the other bank of the Golden Horn, Galata and Karakoy are creative, fashionable Istanbul, among galleries, cafes and waterfront restaurants. It is the choice for anyone who loves design, food and strolling, staying very central.

  • The Galata Tower
  • The waterfront and bars of Karakoy
  • The ferry piers of Eminonu opposite
  • Galleries, specialty cafes and fish restaurants

For style and food, see hotels in Galata.

Taksim and Istiklal

The modern heart around Taksim Square and the pedestrian Istiklal Avenue, with shops, theatres and bars. It is the choice for anyone after nightlife, transport convenience and constant bustle, allowing for a bit of chaos.

  • Taksim Square, the transport hub
  • Istiklal Avenue with its heritage tram
  • Bars, restaurants and late-night venues
  • Metro and funicular across the city

For nightlife and transport, look for hotels in Taksim.

Besiktas and Ortakoy

Along the Bosphorus, Besiktas and Ortakoy combine local life, palaces and a waterfront, with a lovely evening atmosphere. It is the choice for anyone who wants the Bosphorus, markets and a lived-in district, a little off the monument circuit.

For the Bosphorus and local life, see hotels in Besiktas.

Kadikoy, the Asian side

On the Asian bank, Kadikoy is young, authentic Istanbul, among markets, bistros and bars, with the elegant Moda district. It is the choice for anyone after better prices, a real atmosphere and a scenic ferry to Europe.

  • The market and bistros of Kadikoy
  • The seaside neighbourhood of Moda
  • Bars, cafes and local nightlife
  • The scenic ferry to Eminonu and Karakoy

For authenticity and value, look for hotels in Kadikoy.

What it costs

Indicative figures: with the Turkish lira subject to strong inflation, it is best to think in euros and always check up-to-date prices.

  • A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 60-140 euros a night, with wide variation.
  • A dinner for two with drinks: about 25-55 euros; a Turkish tea (cay) under a euro, a Turkish coffee 2-3 euros.
  • Transport: with the Istanbulkart a ride costs small change; Bosphorus ferries are cheap and scenic.
  • Tourist tax: Turkey's accommodation tax (konaklama vergisi) is 1 percent of the room price (excluding VAT), temporarily reduced from 2 percent through the end of 2026. Verify at booking.

For a real sense before you choose, compare current prices in Istanbul.

Getting there and around

The main airport is Istanbul Airport (IST), about 40 km on the European side, linked by the M11 metro and the Havaist buses; the second is Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side. In town trams, metro, funiculars and above all the ferries cover everything.

A car is not advised given the heavy traffic. With a good location, almost everything is on foot, by tram or on a scenic ferry.

When to go

  • April-May: a mild spring and, in April, the tulip season; maybe the best window.
  • June-August: hot and humid, busy, but with the Bosphorus breeze.
  • September-November: pleasant, warm weather, excellent for walking.
  • December-February: cool and rainy, sometimes with snow, low season and lower prices.

Good to know

How much is the tourist tax? One percent of the room price (excluding VAT), reduced from 2 percent through the end of 2026.

What currency is used? The Turkish lira; cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep some cash for bazaars and tea.

How many days do I need? Three or four nights for the monuments, a bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise.
