Best hotels in Vienna: where to stay by area
Austria · February 13, 2026
The best hotels in Vienna and where to stay: the Innere Stadt, MuseumsQuartier, Leopoldstadt, the Naschmarkt and Belvedere, with prices and tips.

Vienna is imperial and orderly, and the area where you sleep changes the tone of the trip: the elegance of the Innere Stadt among palaces and historic cafes, the creative air of Neubau, the green of the Prater or the markets of the Naschmarkt. Metro and tram are efficient, so even a slightly out-of-the-way base stays handy, but staying in the first district lets you walk between monuments and music. Here are the best areas to stay, the prices to reckon with and, at the end, a selection of real hotels with live rates.
Where to stay in Vienna, area by area
The Innere Stadt (first district)
The historic heart around St Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg and the State Opera, with the elegant streets of the Graben and the great coffee houses. It is the right call for a first-timer who wants everything on foot, with the best atmosphere and the highest prices.
- St Stephen's Cathedral and the streets of the Graben
- The Hofburg and the State Opera
- The historic cafes like Cafe Central
- Everything on foot or a few metro stops away
For elegance and a central base, look for hotels in the Innere Stadt.

MuseumsQuartier and Neubau
Just outside the Ring, the MuseumsQuartier and the seventh district of Neubau are creative Vienna: museums, shops, cafes and the picturesque Spittelberg. It is the choice for anyone who loves art, independent shopping and a younger atmosphere, steps from the centre.
- The MuseumsQuartier and the Kunsthistorisches Museum
- The lanes of Spittelberg
- Shops, galleries and neighbourhood cafes
- Handy metro for the whole city
For art and style, see hotels in Neubau.
Leopoldstadt and the Prater
Across the Danube canal, Leopoldstadt is an up-and-coming district beside the big Prater park with its historic Ferris wheel. It is the choice for anyone after greenery, better prices and a more local side, staying a few minutes from the centre.
- The Prater park and the Ferris wheel
- The neighbourhood cafes and restaurants
- Often better prices than the first district
- Fast metro to the centre
For greenery and good value, look for hotels in Leopoldstadt.
Wieden and the Naschmarkt
South of the centre, around the famous Naschmarkt and the Karlskirche, Wieden is a lively, food-loving district. It is the choice for anyone who loves eating, markets and a central but more lived-in area.
- The Naschmarkt market and its stalls
- The Karlskirche and Karlsplatz
- Restaurants, cafes and bars
- A direct metro to the centre
For food and a central base, see hotels in Wieden.

Belvedere and the main station
Around the Belvedere palace and the main station you find more modern, cheaper hotels, handy for trains and the airport. It is the practical choice for arriving by train or leaving early, with the centre a few stops away.
- The palace and gardens of the Belvedere
- The main station and the trains
- Lower prices and modern hotels
- A direct link to the airport
For budget and convenience, look for hotels near the station.
What it costs
Indicative figures: Vienna is in Europe's mid-to-upper range, but with excellent value for the culture.
- A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 110-220 euros a night.
- A dinner for two with wine: about 50-80 euros; a coffee with a slice of Sachertorte in a Kaffeehaus 8-12 euros.
- Transport: a single metro ticket around 2.40 euros; a day pass is worth it.
- Tourist tax: Vienna's Ortstaxe rose to 8.5 percent of the net room rate (excluding breakfast and VAT) from December 2025. Budget for it on top of the rate.
For a real sense before you choose, compare current prices in Vienna.
Getting there and around
The airport is Vienna International (VIE), about 18 km away, linked to the centre by the City Airport Train in a quarter of an hour or the cheaper S7 train. From the main station, trains reach all of Austria and Europe.
In town you do not need a car: metro, tram and buses cover everything and the centre is very walkable. With a good location, monuments, museums and cafes are a few stops or a stroll away.

When to go
- January-March: cold, but with the ball season, including the famous Opera Ball; lower prices after the holidays.
- April-June: a splendid spring, gardens in bloom, maybe the best window.
- July-August: warm and lively, with concerts and open-air cinema in front of the City Hall.
- September-October: excellent, mild weather and the new-wine season in the Heuriger taverns.
- November-December: cold, but with the famous Christmas markets, among the finest in Europe.
