Best hotels in Rio de Janeiro: where to stay

Rio de Janeiro is a city between the mountains and the sea, with legendary beaches, Christ the Redeemer on the Corcovado and a rhythm all its own, and the area where you sleep completely changes the trip: legendary Copacabana, chic Ipanema, the historic centre with Lapa, bohemian Santa Teresa, local Botafogo. The metro runs along the beaches and Uber is the handiest way to get around, so location matters. Here are the best areas to stay, the prices to reckon with and, at the end, a selection of real hotels with live rates.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro, area by area

Copacabana

The famous crescent beach with its wave-patterned promenade, hotels of every class and life day and night. It is the right call for a first-timer who wants the classic beach, convenience and good value.

For the beach and convenience, look for hotels in Copacabana.

Ipanema and Leblon

The chic beaches, with boutiques, the best restaurants and a more polished atmosphere. It is the choice for anyone after elegance, good food and one of the most pleasant bases, at higher prices.

For elegance and food, see hotels in Ipanema.

Centro and Lapa

The historic centre of museums and colonial buildings and lively Lapa with its samba and nightlife. It is the choice for anyone who loves culture by day and nightlife by night, knowing the centre is quieter after office hours.

For culture and nightlife, look for hotels in Lapa.

Santa Teresa

The bohemian hilltop district, of cobbled lanes, artists' studios and bay views, with its famous tram. It is the choice for anyone after atmosphere, charm and a calm, scenic base.

For atmosphere and views, see hotels in Santa Teresa.

Botafogo and Flamengo

The local bayside districts, with the finest views of Sugarloaf, Botafogo's fashionable bars and the great Flamengo park. It is the choice for anyone after authenticity, better prices and a handy metro.

For local life and value, look for hotels in Botafogo.

What it costs

Indicative figures: Brazil uses the real (BRL, around 6 to a euro) and Rio is quite affordable for Europeans.

  • A double room in a mid-range 3-4 star: roughly 400-900 BRL a night (about 67-150 euros).
  • A dinner for two: about 200-400 BRL (about 33-67 euros); a caipirinha 25-40 BRL, a coffee 8-15 BRL.
  • Transport: a metro ride around 6-7 BRL; line 1 runs along the beaches. Uber is the handiest and safest way to get around.
  • Tourist tax: Rio's small bed tax has long been dormant and optional (historically around 1.50-5 BRL per room per night by property); the city has discussed reintroducing it around Carnival 2026, so the situation is in flux. Some hotels also add a 10 percent service charge. Verify the total at booking.

For a real sense before you choose, compare current prices in Rio de Janeiro.

Getting there and around

The international airport is Galeao (GIG), about 20 km north; for domestic flights there is Santos Dumont (SDU), near the centre. In town the metro links Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and the centre; Uber is handy and cheap.

With a good location you get around easily by metro and Uber. In the evening it is best to use Uber and avoid the beaches and isolated areas after dark.

When to go

Remember Rio is in the southern hemisphere, with the seasons reversed.

  • December-March: a hot, humid summer, high season and beaches; the New Year Reveillon on Copacabana beach is enormous.
  • February: Carnival (mid-February in 2026) fills the city and spikes prices: book well ahead.
  • April-May: warm and pleasant, with fewer crowds.
  • June-August: a mild, dry winter, with sunny days and lower prices.

Good to know

Which area is best on a first visit? Copacabana for the classic beach and value, or Ipanema and Leblon for elegance.

Do I need a car in Rio? No, the metro along the beaches plus Uber are enough; a car is a nuisance. Use Uber at night.

Is there a tourist tax? Rio's small tax has been dormant and optional; reintroduction is being discussed for 2026, so check the total; a 10 percent service charge may also apply.

How do I reach Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf? Christ by the Corcovado cog train or vans; Sugarloaf by cable car: both are unmissable.

Are there safety concerns? Use common sense: keep valuables hidden, use Uber in the evening and stick to busy areas.

When is Carnival in 2026? Mid-February: book well ahead, prices multiply.

How many days do I need? Four nights for the beaches, Christ, Sugarloaf and a day in Santa Teresa and the centre.
